Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency is partnered with Penn State and the University of Cape Town on two major long-term projects:

Parks and People: South Africa.  Parks and People is an integrated teaching, research and outreach program focused around a ten-week undergraduate study abroad program in the Eastern cape Province of South Africa.  The original partnership involved Penn State, UCT, and the Eastern Cape Parks Board.  We are now in the third year of the program and Rhodes University is now also active in the program and Walter Sisulu University will also join in 2012.  Further information on the program can be found at https://aeseda.psu.edu/programs/parks-and-people-south-africa/

Wild Coast Living Laboratory.  The Wild Coast Living Laboratory is a new initiative just getting underway in the Eastern Cape.  Building out of the Parks and People Program, Penn State, UCT, and the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency have been joined by the Applied Center for Climate and Earth System Science (ACCESS), the Eastern Cape Universities (Walter Sisulu, Fort Hare and Rhodes), Eastern Cape communities and several other research agencies to develop a Living Laboratory on the Eastern Cape Wild Coast.  The Living Laboratory is envisioned as promoting multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary and integrative research that advances our knowledge of natural and human systems under conditions of environmental and social change, demonstrates the linkages and interactions between these systems, provides educational and outreach opportunities that improve the livelihood opportunities of local populations, and promotes human capacity building in the sciences in South Africa.
