From Peduase to Accra: Advancing Ghana’s Engineering Education Agenda

Prof. Kwadwo Osseo-Asare’s passion for reshaping engineering education in Africa and other developing nations has been a longstanding commitment. Through his blog and various initiatives, he has championed the cause of equipping young minds with the skills needed to drive technological progress in these regions.

In collaboration with a high-level think-tank of Ghanaian engineers, both local and in the diaspora, Prof. Osseo-Asare delved into the challenges and opportunities of engineering education in the context of Africa’s development. This endeavor reflects his dedication to finding sustainable solutions for the continent.

One of the pivotal moments in this journey was his role on the organizing committee of the Conference on Bridging the Technology Gap Towards “Ghana Beyond Aid” and Youth Employment, held in Peduase, Ghana in January 2019. This by-invitation-only event, co-hosted by the Republic of Ghana Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) and the Ghana Institution of Engineering, brought together thought leaders and practitioners to tackle pressing issues related to technology, youth employment, and economic development.

Following this conference, Prof. Osseo-Asare orchestrated a thought-provoking panel discussion on the theme “Is changing engineering education in Ghana the solution to economic development?”. This event, held under the Heritage and Cultural Society of Africa (HACSA) Summit in Accra, Ghana in August 2019, provided a platform for critical discourse on the transformative potential of engineering education in the Ghanaian context.
